In a recent study done by the Workforce Institute at UKG, it was found that 60% of employees worldwide say that their job is the single biggest factor influencing their mental health. The same study found that managers have as much of an impact on people’s mental health as their spouse (69%) – and even more of an impact than their doctor (51%) or therapist (41%).
This shows that leaders have a direct impact on their team members’ wellbeing. As today is Ireland’s National Workplace Wellbeing Day, it is a great time to ask,“What can I do as a leader to support team members?”
1. Enable a culture of psychological safety within the team; one where team members can feel safe to bring up issues, feel validated and not fear retaliation form mistakes.
2. Use effective performance management techniques, where constructive and frequent feedback is given based on performance and KPIs, rather than personal characteristics.
3. Celebrate success! Help team members feel recognised and appreciated by highlighting and rewarding what is working well.
